“Guys like us ,/ that work on ranches, / are the loneliest guys in
The world. ; They got no family. / They don’t belong no place. /
they come to a ranch / an’ work up a stake / and then they go
in a town / and blow their stake, / and the first thing you know /
they’re pounding their tail on some other ranch. / They ain’t got
nothing / to look ahead to .”
(像我們這樣的人，/ 在農場工作，是世上最孤獨的人。/ 沒有家
人，/ 不屬於任何地方。/ 來到一家農場，/ 工作賺了點奬金，/然
後來到另一個城鎮，/ 花掉那些錢。/首先你知道的是，/ 他們又
到另一個農場做事，/ 他們沒有什麼，可以往前看的。)
流浪的農工(migrant workers)沒有任何未來可以期望(“…got
nothing to look ahead.”。在這本描寫美國三零年經濟大蕭條
(Great Depression)窮人悲慘命運的小說中，1962年美國諾貝爾
文學奬得主John Steinbeck，透過小說中的主角George 道出窮人
的最大悲哀：沒有未來。《人鼠之間》以兩個在加州農場打工的
難兄難弟George及Lennie的生活為主，即使兩人並無血縁關係，
但親密的友誼與互相的依存，成為本故事感人的重心。
主題分析：
人與人之間的友誼VS環境的漠然
小說一開始，就以類似溫馨田園的景色來引出自然環境的美：
A few miles south of Soledad, / the Salinas River drops in /
close to the hillside bank / and runs deep and green. / The
water is warm too, / for it has slipped / twinkling over the yellow
sands / in the sunlight / before reaching the narrow pool. / On
One side of the river / the golden foothill slopes / curve up to /
the strong and rocky Gabilan mountains, / but on the valley side
/ the water is lined with trees-/ willows fresh and green / with
every spring .( 在Soledad南衣幾哩的地方，/ Salinas河落下，/
靠近山坡岸邊，/ 流得又深又緑。/ 水也很溫軟，/ 因為從上滑下
，/ 閃爍在黃沙上，/ 在陽光底下，/ 直到抵達狹窄在水塘。/ 在河
的一邊，/ 黃金色的山丘斜坡，/ 往上蜿蜓到 / 堅硬的Gabilan山
陵，/ 而在河谷這邊，/ 河水沿線一排樹木，/ 柳樹活力十足、 充
滿綠意，/ 隨著每次搖晃。)
這段文字簡單輕快，作者使用幾個生動、活力的動詞如drops.
runs, slipped, twinklling, reaching, curve up 等點出了河流與大自
然的生命。此外，一些顏色如green, golden都令人感覺整個大自
然環境的生命力與希望。然而接下去出場的兩個主角卻是缺乏大
自然的這種綠色與金黃色的活力：
Both wore black. Shapeless hats / and both carried tight
blanket rolls / slung over their shoulders. / The first man was
small / and quick, / dark of face, / with restless eyes / and sharp,
strong features…/ Behind him walked / his opposite, / a huge
man, shapeless of face, / with large, pale eyes, / with wide,
sloping shoulders; / and he walked heavily, / dragging his feet a
little, / the way a bear drags his paws.(兩人戴著黑色不成型的
帽子，/ 扛著緊捆的毛毯，/ 背在肩上。/ 第一個人很瘦小，/ 動作
敏捷，/ 臉黑，/ 眼神不安，/ 容貌突出； 堅毅…/ 在他後走皂
，/ 跟他完全相反，/ 巨大，面貌不明顯，眼睛很大、蒼白，/ 肩
膀寬大、 下垂。/ 走路步伐沈重，/ 拖著腳，有如一隻熊拖著大
爪。)
這裡呈現的兩個人物，顏色灰暗，拖著腳步，無之前大自然的
生動活潑。兩種場境點出了本小說的主題：人VS.環境；灰暗VS.
活力，儼然有些自然主義小說的成份：大自然對於人的存在是冷
漠的，而人的命運受到環境的主宰，無法擁有自我的意志。一般
讀者在閱讀小說時，常常跳過些景色(scene)或人物(character)
的描寫，僅著重情節(plot)的鋪陳。其實，小說在一開始透過這
些場景的介紹與人物的出場，已經隱含故事發展的主軸。
小說中的小個子George與大個子Lennie兩人相依為命，到處
流浪，在農場打零工，面對外在環境與社會的冷漠，僅有兩人的
堅強的友誼及對未來的憧憬 (買一塊屬於自己的地)，支撐他們
繼續活下去：
George went on, / “With us it ain’t like that . / We got a future. /
We got somebody to talk to …/ We don’t have to sit in no bar
Room / blowin’ our jack / jus’ because we got no place else to
Go…/”(George繼續說，/ 「我們不像那樣。/ 我們有未來。/
我們有人可以講話，…/ 我們不必坐在酒吧裡，花光我們的錢，/
只是因為我們沒有地方可以去。/ 」
Lennie broke in , / “But not us! / An’why? /Because…Because
I got you to look after me, / and you got me to look after you, /
and that’s why.” / He laughed delighted. / “Go on now, George!” /
(Lennie 插嘴，/ 「我們不是！/ 為何？/ 因為…我有你可以
照顧我，/ 你有我可以照顧你。/ 這就是為什麼！」/ 他笑的很開
心，/ 「繼續講，George!」
“O.K. / Someday-/ we’re gonna get the jack together / and we’re
gonna have a little house / and a couple of acres / an’ a cow /
and some pigs and-/ “(「是的，/ 有一天 / --我們有錢，/ 我
們將可以擁有一間小屋，/ 一兩畝地、 / 一隻母年、 幾隻豬--」
即使在困苦與悲觀的環境之中，他們擁有彼此幻想未來能夠
擁有自己的土地，兩人的對話，即使充滿天真的話語與不成熟的
想法，但卻展現那種純真的友誼。然而這種希望與堅強的友誼，
在碰到外在敵意的環境中，漸漸破滅。
小說中的Lennie是個智能不足的憨直大個子，喜歡撫摸柔軟的
事物如老鼠。但是柔軟的老鼠常在其不經意的強壯手掌中捏死。
老鼠與人之間(of mice and men) 的脆弱關係、 溫柔與強壯(soft
and strong )的對比，希望與死亡(hope and death)的交錯，構成
了這本小說溫馨卻又感傷的情節。
在窮苦的時代裡，在大自然冷漠的空間裡，窮人悲慘、 感人的
故事，永遠是這時代裡最撼動人心的題材。
