機器公敵(下)I, Robot
科幻小說以科枝的角度切入，討論人類未來的想像與理性思維
空間，常常缺乏人文的看法。然而，Asimov的這本機器人小說，
卻不斷地從人類感生的觀點來看邏輯思維的優缺點，也就是用人
的思維去解決機器的問題。我們摘録幾段有關機器人三大定律的
理性面與矛盾面。
精彩片段賞析：
“If a robot can be created / capable of being a civil executive, / I
think he’d make the best one possible. / By the Laws of Robotics, /
he’d be incapable of harming humans, / incapable of tyranny, / of
corruption, / of stupidity, / of prejudice.”
在”Evidence”(證據)故事中，美國機器人公司的首席心裡顧
問Dr. Susan Calvin對一位即將參選的政治人物Stephen Byerley
這麼說：「假如機器人可以被創造 / 有能力成為政府首長，/ 我想
他會成為最好的人選。/ 透過機器人三大定律，/ 他不會傷害人類
，/ 不會專制暴政，/ 不會貪污，/ 不會愚蠢，/ 不會有偏見。」在
故事中，Byerley被對手懷疑已受傷死亡，而複製機器人替身參選
。Dr. Calvin用盡各種方法仍無法證實Byerley到底是人或機器。
這時機器人的第一定律(“機器人不得傷害人類”)證實了Byerley
是人類；因他在公開場合攻擊挑釁他的人類。在與Byerley對話
時，Dr. Calvin其實內心認為Byerley應是機器人替身(也是理想
的政府官員)。但Byerley如何突破第一定律的邏輯限制呢？Dr.
Calvin從理性思維中找到其邏輯的漏洞：
Dr. Calvin rose and smoothed her dress. She was obviously ready
to leave. “I mean there is one time when a robot may strike a
human without breaking the First Law. Just one time.”
“And when is that ?”
Dr. Calvin was at the door. She said quietly, “when the human to
be struck is merely another robot.”
She smiled broadly, her thin face glowing. “Good-by Mr. Byerley. I
hope to vote for you…”
在這段對話中，我們難得看到Dr. Calvin女性的溫柔，一方面起
身，一方面拉平自己的衣服 (smoothed her dress)，其動作充滿
理性，平靜地說話 (said quietly)，但也處處顯露其人性的一面
(smiled broadly, her thin face glowing 很露骨大地微笑，瘦小
的臉興奮亮了起來！)。她指出，原來Mr. Byerley可以假設挑釁
他的並非人類而是機器人，這樣身為機器人的他就以利用第二
、 第三定律來保護自己，這種利用假設前提的漏洞來破規矩，
是否也凸顯理性思維本身的缺陷呢？ 小說中不斷強調機器思維單
純的優勢，但也指出其單純的不足：
“…a robot might fail / due to / the inherent inadequacies of his
brain. / The positronic brain has never equalled the complexities of
the human brain. (機器人可能會失敗，/ 由於其頭腦先天不足
。電子腦從來就比不上人腦的複雜度。) 這裡說話者使用might
表示一種推測，由於(due to)某種原因，機器人可能 (might的推
測可能性低) 會失敗。而第二句用現在成式，表示過去到現在
為止，電腦一直都無法跟人腦相提並論。
機器人的電腦邏輯思維單純，可以用定律來規範，但終究無法
與人腦相比，在”Runaround” (繞圈子) 的故事中，兩位機器人
工程師，發現他們派出去擔任危險工作的機器人在繞圈子，甚至
出現精神錯亂的現象,原來第二定律與第三定律間的矛盾讓機器
人無法運作，由於第二定律，機器人必須依照人類指示去危險地
帶工作，然而第三定律又要其保護自我的存在，因此機器人依
照第二定律往前,卻又依照第三定律退後，造成繞圈子。作者挑
戰讀者的思維，有如偵探小說般，我們該如何解開這個矛盾的結
呢？
“All right. According to Rule 1, a robot can’t see a human come to
harm because of his own inaction. Two and 3 can’t stand against
it . They can’t, Mike.”…
“What are you going to do?”
“I’m going out there now and see what Rule 1 will do. If it won’t
break the balance, then what the devil—it’s either now or three-four
days from now.”
沒錯，就是使用第一定律！ 工程師將自己暴露在危險地帶，打破
第二、第三定律的平衡性(balance)，這樣就能將失控的機器人拉
回正常的思維。
本故事中，描寫工程師Donovan冒險到外星球的烈日下面，動作
驚險，重重危機，英文句中生動的動詞，夾雜人物內心的想法，
讀來有身歷其境的感覺：
He proceeded on foot, / the ground gritty and slippery to his steps,
/ the low gravity causing him difficulty. / The soled of his feet /
tickled with warmth. / He cast one glance over his shoulder / at
the blackness of the cliff’s shadow / and realized that he had come
/ too far to return.
(他步行前進，/ 每步感覺地上沙沙滑滑，/ 低引力讓他行進困難
。/ 腳底 / 熱得發癢。/ 回頭一看 / 山崖陰影投下的漆黑，/ 他知道
自己走得 / 太遠了回不去。)
此處動詞proceed, tickle, cast, realize 都用得非常貼切：gritty
and slippery, warmth 都是將個人感受融入行動中，也是非常傳神
。閱讀時多注意這些生動動詞及一些情緒的描寫，享受閱讀的樂
趣。
