上期提到，英國人曾征服了半個地球，成為日不落帝國。其實，英國人也是世界著名的幽默大師。他們取笑別人，自我嘲諷，一語雙關（pun）是常見的事。 對他們而言，理想的男性須具備幽默感（sense of humor），以達至完美的標準（perfect standard）。
女人溫柔 表面現象
曾經有這麼一個笑話，他們的男人情願承認犯了叛國罪（treason）、 縱火（arson）等，裝了假牙（false teeth），戴了假髮（wig），也不願承認自己缺乏幽默感。以下是一些否認人們所期待男人力量的幽默笑話，傳統女人溫柔恭順，只是表面現象 （superficial phenomenon）。
e.g. He thinks he is a strong man type, but the only bar he can bend between his teeth is a chocolate bar.
e.g. Married men make the best salesmen because they are used to taking orders.
上流含蓄 基層誇大
在英國的幽默中，階級差異相關明顯，低下階層（low social class）喜歡誇大自詞（overstate），而貴族則喜歡欲言又止（understate）。這一傳統可追溯到莎士比亞（William Shakespeare）時代，他寫的劇本不是喝倒彩的言辭激烈的笑話，就是上流社會微妙含蓄的相關語。以下是對一個一夜暴發戶（nouveau-riche）的碼頭工人打貴族階層的高爾夫球的描述。
e.g. An East End docker won 50,000 on the pools, so they couldn't very well refuse his lavish subscription when he wanted to join the golf club. All they can do is looking the other way as he spits on his hands before wielding his mashie.
社會低下階層就是不能從事貴族階層的體育運動，也不能穿隆重的服飾。
