《Fahrenheit 451》
書本帶質感的知識，驅除了無知，但是否也帶來了覺醒與
痛苦？
精彩片段賞析：
主人翁Montag 有次在家裡，看到太太與友人看電視，輕浮且無
知地討論戰爭，他拿起十九世紀討人Matthew Arnold的一首詩
“Dover
Beach”敍述戰爭的殘忍與人世的荒謬：
Ah, love, let us
be true
(啊，愛人，讓我們忠誠)
To one another!
For the world, which seems
(對待彼此！因為這世界似乎是)
To lie before us
like a land of dreams,
(展現在我們面前，有如夢境般)
So various, so
beautiful, so new,
(這樣多變、這樣美、這樣新)
Hath really
neither joy, nor love, nor light,
(其實，並無喜悅、亦無愛、亦無光亮)
Nor certitude, nor
peace, nor help for pain;
(亦無真實；亦無和平； 亦無法解決痛苦)
And we here as on
a darkling plain
(我們在此，有如置身暗無天日的平原上)
Swept with
confused alarms of struggle and flight,

聽到這首詩，其中的Mrs. Phelps感受這首詩的悲愴,突然痛哭
，驚嚇了所有的人：
Mrs. Phelps was
crying…
“Sh, sh,” said
Mildred. “You’re all right, Clara, now, Clara, snap
Out of it! Clara,
what’s wrong?”
“I-I,” sobbed Mrs.
Phelps, “don’t know, don’t know, I just don’t
Know, oh,oh…”
Mrs. Bowels stood
up / and glared at Montag. “You see? / I
Knew it, / that’s
what I wanted to prove! / I knew it would
Happen! / I’ve
always said poetry and tears, / poetry and
Suicide and crying
and awful feelings, / poetry and sickness; /
All that mush!”(Mr.s
Bowels站起來，/ 瞪著Montag：「你看，/
我就知道，/ 這就是我想證明的，/ 我知道這會發生，/ 我總是說
詩引起眼淚，/ 詩引起自殺、 哭泣還有可怕感覺，/ 詩引起病
態：/ 這一切的感傷：」)
沒錯，詩觸動了我們的感傷，也觸動了我們對外在世界的認
知。然而是否因為知識帶來覺醒與痛苦，我們就應該放棄知識
呢？Montag對生倆的渴望，還是讓他繼續擁抱書本。最後
妻子及友人密報，他匆忙地逃離家園，仍然拯救心愛的書本：
Montag took the four remaining books, / and hopped, /
jolted, / hopped
his way / down the alley / and suddenly fell /
as if his head had
been cut off / and only hid body lay there. /
Something inside
had jerked him to a halt / and flopped him
Down. / He lay
where he had fallen / and sobbed, / his legs
Folded, / his face
pressed blindly to the gravel.
(Montag 帶著四本留下來的書，/ 跳脫、/ 搖晃、 / 逃離/ 到巷子
，/ 突然他跌倒在地，/ 好像頭被砍掉一樣，/ 只有身子躺在那。/
心裡有事拉扯著他/ 停下來，把他拉倒。/ 他趴在跌倒的地方
，/ 低泣，/ 腳縮著，/ 臉茫然地壓在地上的碎石。)
心中的覺醒讓他停住。作者使用幾個生動且節奏非常快速的
動詞如 hopped, jolted, fell, cut off, jerked, flopped, sobbed,
Folded,
pressed 來強調這瞬間的連續動作，簡潔明快，點出
那時Montag的頓悟。
Montag抱著書本，逃離機器的文明(書中以helicopters及擅
長追蹤的機器狗The Mechanical Hound代表)，進入了反省的
階段。作者以燃燒的意像來說明Montag的文明反思：
The sun burnt every day. / It burnt Time. / The would rushed in
a circle / and
turned on its axis / and time was busy / burning
the years and the
people anyway, / without any help from him.
/ So / if he burnt
thing s with the firemen / and the sun burnt
Time, / that meant
that everything burnt! /
(太陽每天燃燒，/ 燃燒時間，/ 這世界匆忙地繞圈，順著自己
的軸線，/ 時間忙著 / 燃燒歲月與人們，/ 無需他的協助。/ 所以
/ 如果他也跟其他放火員一起燒東西，/ 太陽也在燃燒時間，/ 那
就表示一切都會燃燒起來)
所有文明的世界，都隨著時間的流逝(the sun and Time) 而
消失(被燃燒)，如果人類自己也在燃燒文明(書本)，那所
有的一切將消失無蹤！書本保留文明的記憶，知識見證人類文
明存在的價值。Montag 揚棄過去燃燒記憶的過失，加入了保留
文明記憶的行列。他在鄉間遇到了一群知識難民(renegade
intellectuals)，也就是所謂的Book People(書人)，每個人在腦
中記憶一本書：
“We are all bits
and pieces / of history and / literature and /
International law.
/ Byron, / Tom Paine, / Machiavelli, / or
Christ, / it’s here.)
(我們都是小小塊、 小小片，/ 歷史、 / 文學 / 或國際法。/ 拜侕
、 / 潘恩、 馬基維立、/ 或耶穌基督，/ 都在此)。
Montag腦中背下聖經的傳道書(the Book
of Ecclesiastes)，誠
如其中的成員Granger所說的，他們都在等待文明的復甦：
And when the war’s
over, / someday, some year, / the books
Can be written
again, / the people will be called in, one by one,
/ to recite what
they know / and we’ll set it up in type / until
Another Dark Age….(當戰爭結束，/ 哪一天，哪一年 / 書可
以重寫，我們這些人會一個一個被召喚，/ 去背誦所知道的，/
我們會把它印下來，/ 直到另一個黑暗時期。)
人類的知識與記憶，充滿著韌性，在人類歷又中即時曾經被
壓抑(如西方中古世紀的書禁及東方的焚書)，但都態不斷地
延續。這本雖是未來預言小說(預這文字與紙本的消失)，但
不也述說過去書本知識的一段歷史？
