描寫社會邊緣人的小說中，《人鼠之間》強調美國夢(America
Dream)的破碎，而存在於人與人之間，最值得珍惜的就是：希
望與友誼。
精彩片段賞析：
〝希望〞是這些社會邊緣人賴以生存的精神糧食。天真的Lennie經
常要求George描述未來的生活—他們可以擁有自己的土地
與小動物：
Lennie said, “Tell
about that place, George.”
(談談那個地方，George)
“I jus’ tol’ you,
jus’ las’ night.”(我告訴過你了，昨天晚上)
“Go on—tell again,
George.”(繼續講，再說一遍，George)
“Well, it’s ten
acres,” said George. / “Got a little win’mill. / Got
a little shack on
it, / an’ a chicken run. / Got a kitchen, /
orchard, /
cherries, / apples, / peaches,…/ They’s a place
for alfalfa / and

George’s hands

越來越溫馨。/ 我們可以養幾隻豬,/ 我可以蓋個燻製房，/ 就像

“…We’d just’ live there. / We’d belong there.…”(我們就住
在那，/ 我們屬於那個地方。)
每當兩個難兄難弟做完白天的苦工，George 不斷編織兩人的未
來，好好奮鬥存錢，可以擁有自己的土地、 找到自己歸屬的地
方，這種類似宗教儀式(rituals)的不斷自我肯定與憧憬理想天堂
的做法，正是這些社價邊緣人的”美國夢”。就連年老的農場幫工
Candy也被感染，要求加入，即使知道這些都是遙不可及：
“S’pose I went it
with you guys. / Tha’s three hundred an’ fifty
bucks / I’d put
in. I ain’t much good, / but I could cook / and
tend the chickens
/ and hoe the garden some. / How’d that
be?” (假如我跟你們一起，/ 那就是三百五十塊，/ 我可以投入
。/ 我不是很行，/ 不過我可以煮飯，/ 照顧雞群，/ 花園鋤草，/
這樣如何？)
老人誠懇的話語令人動容。George燃起希望，三人剎那間為
自己的希望、想像感動：
They all sat /
still, / all bemused / by the beauty of the thing,
/ each mind was
popped / into the future / when this lovely
thing should come
about. / (他們坐在那，/ 一動也不動，/ 呆
住了，/ 這一切的美。每個心思突然 / 進入未來，/ 這些美妙的
事情可能發生！)
此處的lovely thing 指的是怹們的夢想與希望。看著未來，這一
切都是美的展現(the beauty of the thing)。
然而這種美感被外來的誘惑所破壞了！農場年輕主人Curley的
太太孤獨寂寞，常常找這些窮苦的勞工搭訕。在一次意外中，
強壯但智力不足的Lennie扭斷了女主人的頸部。這個死亡意外
，真是上蒼的作弄，毀了這些邊緣的希望！ 接近故事尾聲時
，George帶著Lennie逃離農莊，但是如何面對Curley一幫人的
追殺，George與Lennie必須付出慘痛的代價。小說最後一章利
用水蛇的死亡象徵Lennie最後的命運：
A water snake
glided smoothly up the pool, / twisting its
periscope head /
from side to side; / and it swam the length of
the pool / and
came to the legs of a motionless heron / that
stood in the
shallows. / A silent head and beak / lanced down /
and plucked it out
by the head, / and the beak swallowed the
little snake /
while its tail waved frantically. / (一條水蛇平穩地

/ 來到了一動也不動的蒼鷹腳下，/ 站在淺水中。/ 寧靜的頭與嘴

作者利用強有力的動詞描寫水蛇在一瞬間死於蒼鷹嘴中，其中
Lanced
down, plucked it out, swallowed 一氣呵成，凸顯死亡的
快速與生命的脆弱。
George與Lennie間的友誼，是一件令人動容的場景。儘管幼稚
且強壯的Lennie常常讓他們兩失掉工作，George雖抱怨卻仍
堅守著Lennie：
George still
stared morosely at the fire. / “When I think of the
swell time / I
coukd have without you, / I got nuts. / I never get
no peace.”(George哀偒地瞪著柴火。當我想到美好時光，/
沒有你,/ 我就會發瘋，/ 得不到任何安寧。)
Lennie still
knelt, He looked off into the darkness across the
river. “George ,
you want I should go away and leave you
alone?”
“Where the hell
could you go?”
一句「你能去哪？」(Where the hell could you go?)道出了兩者
間的依存關係。George願意守著一個智能不足的大漢，來自於
內心對Lennie真誠付出的感動：他自白說：
“.…One day / a bunch of guys was standin’ around up on the
Sacramento River.
/ I was feelin’ pretty smart. / I turms to
Lennie and says ,
/ ‘Jump in.” / An’ he jumps. / Couldn’t swim a
stroke. / He damn
near drowned / before we could get him. /
An’ he was so damn
nice to me / for pullin’ him out. / Clean
forgot / I told
him to jump in. / Well, I ain’t done nothing like
that no more.”/ (有一天，/ 一堆人站在河邊。/ 我覺得自己了不
起，/ 我轉向Lennie，說 / 跳下去。/ 他就跳了。/ 一點都不會
游泳。/ 他幾乎快淹死了，/ 我們救他起來。/ 他對我超好的，/
將他拉出來。/ 完全忘記 / 是我叫他跳下去的。喔，從此我就
不會作這種事了！)
Lennie這種毫無心機的忠誠與友誼打動了George，因此他決定
永遠照顧這位容易受傷的兄弟。兩人的堅強友誼成為這個冷酷
世界中唯一溫暖，也是這本小說令人回味之處。
